Cattle Call Rodeo

Held at the Cattle Call Arena in Brawley, California, the Cattle Call Rodeo began in 1957 with what was considered an “amateur affair.” It wasn’t until 1960 that the rodeo went “pro” when it was sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). In addition to the Championship Rodeo and Finale Rodeo, the yearly community celebration features a Queen Contest, Chili Cook Off, Fiesta Cultura, Chamber Kick-Off Mixer, Cowboy Poetry, Noche del Corrido Mariachi Night, Cowbelle’s Beef Cook Off, Blue Grass Festival and Cattle Call Parade. Cattle Call Rodeo History. Before the Cattle Call Rodeo became the Cattle Call Rodeo, it needed a name. It came about when the Brawley Chamber of Commerce conducted a contest. The winner and recipient of a $25.00 U.S. Savings Bond was Marial (Mrs. Rex) Hudson, who submitted “Cattle Call,” the name of a popular western song written by Tex Owens in 1934 and made famous by Eddy Arnold.
